EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY –  The St. Louis Rams lost their 2003 season opener, 23-13 to the New York Giants at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

 

The Rams fall to 0-1 on the season and have lost their second consecutive season opener on the road.

 

The Rams did have some statistical milestones in the game.   WR Isaac Bruce registered his 32nd career 100-yard game after making a game-high eight catches for 120 yards.    WR Torry Holt made seven receptions for 111 yards, his 18th career 100-yard receiving game.   It is the seventh time since 1999 that the Rams have two 100-yard receivers in the same game and 27th time overall.

 

Despite suffering concussion-like symptoms, QB Kurt Warner recorded his 30th career 300-yard passing game after completing 34 of 54 passes for 342 yards and one touchdown with one interception.

 

The Rams got on the board with 5:08 to go in the first quarter when they converted a CB Jerametrius Butler fumble recovery into three points when K Jeff Wilkins hit a 39-yard field goal.

The Giants then took the lead when DT William Joseph sacked Warner in the endzone, Warner fumbled, and the ball was recovered by Giants DE Kenny Holmes for a 7-3 lead with 2:21 to go in the first quarter.

 

The Giants upped their lead to 10-3 when K Matt Bryant converted a 24-yard field goal with 10:00 to go in the second quarter.

 

Wilkins connected on his second field goal of the day with 3:18 remaining in the first half when he completed a six-play, 28-yard drive, with a 28-yard field goal and the score was 10-6 at the half.

 

Bryant’s second field goal of the day, from 47 yards, made the score 13-6 with 8:45 left in the third quarter.

 

With 5:03 to go in the third quarter, Collins, Barber, and the Giants offense went on a six-play, 53-yard drive that took 3:11 off of the clock and culminated in a one-yard run by RB Brian Mitchell to extend the Giants lead to 20-6.

 

On the Giants next offensive drive they increased their lead to 23-6 when Bryant hit a 44-yard field goal.

 

The Rams finally found their way into the endzone with 14:03 left in the fourth quarter.  Warner connected with Holt on a 37-yard scoring pass to make the score 23-13 and cap an eight-play, 74-yard drive that took 3:40 off of the clock.
